Today’s opinion makers are descendants of now deceased or forgotten critics, who they read and carry on their observations (views). Some written just to tell a story or to establish an attitude of themselves for their careers.
I was then as now taken to task for doing artwork for money to supplement my meager fine art. What happened was I found the commissions challenging and the sources I contributed to were knowledgeable and demanding. I felt indeed fortunate. I was able to do both so called (by them) commercial art and my own for myself painting. When the reason, was, in most cases, they (the pure artists) were unable to measure up to standards unnecessary to be effective
