Title

Note on Art

Subject

A note from LeRoy Neiman on his critical reception.

Description

This note from LeRoy Neiman looks at the artist’s critical reception. Although the note is one of many touching on this topic, what proves distinct about this document constitutes the kind of organic process to which Neiman prescribes causation (for his critical opprobrium, that is). The artist conceives of this process through a kind of germ theory or telephone-effect, speaking to a kind of yes-man sentiment within the so-called art establishment. The negative reception Neiman received proved a perpetual difficulty for the artist.

Text

The conclusions (early on) that were made about my work contributed on to the consequences that these premises ultimately enact. (were perpetuated by next generation and from there on by critics who wouldn’t).
In the beginning, well before the consequences became repugnant, conclusions were expected or hoped will be overturned, the artist begins to realize that the evaluation has developed to a confirmed opinion repeated over and over by new critics, echoing what was originally said. (To the paint we print that that was the only point from which it could be seen.)
Where did I go wrong? Unfortunately, (for) me to be labeled as unacceptable for one (reason) or another. It being impossible to retrace why it all built up and perpetuated based on the conclusions that from which they sprang. The influence [?] pick-up by people new critics who did not check me out or attend my New York exhibitions, where they hold forth.
This is a response from 85 year old hand. I have made millions along with my representations but so too have the canonized artist and their supporters. Why is the artist popular artist attacked for making millions when due to a public response. /
