This collection features correspondence between artist LeRoy Neiman and his mother, Lydia Hoelscher, from the artist's early adulthood to Hoelscher's passing in 1985.
Description
An account of the resource
Lydia Hoelscher was an integral figure in LeRoy Neiman's early life, being the near sole consistent presence. Hoelscher, née Serline, married Neiman’s father Charles Runquist in 1918, with the couple and their two sons LeRoy (b. 1921) and Earl (b. 1920) residing in Duluth. When Runquist absconded the family in 1926, the mother moved to Saint Paul, wedding a leather factory foreman of Polish-German descent, "Jack L. Neiman" (John L. Niman). Avoiding what the artist describes in his memoir All Told as, “bothersome adoption legalities,” the children assumed their stepfather’s surname. The elder Neiman's alcoholic tendencies and Depression Era unemployment however led to early divorce. Lydia married Ernst G. Hoelscher roughly five years later, in 1940.

Neiman maintained minimal correspondence with these male figures, including Earl, who had expatriated to Italy. These letters then provide a unique window into the artist’s family life, with the bulk written from Hoelscher to Neiman in the years leading up to her passing.

Dearest LeRoy! – Hello on this great Birthday, I wish you every(thing) good and nice as you deserve, sure seems a long time ago on a cooking hot day, God brought you to me, and ever sense I been the proudest mother on this ear. So God bless you. and keep on his guiding way for you, for many more years to come.
the weather sure is different to-day, its kind of cool and cloudy. I keep on thinking of you all the time, of course I do everyday, but somehow its different to-day.
I just got out of my food soak, I have a sore between my toes that’s been giving me some trouble, so I have to give it foot soak every day and put on some [salve], to me it’s nothing but the nurses here seem to make a big fuss over it. So I go along so far. anyway I didn’t want to write about sore toes, its a great day I have you which I /
thank God every day for. only trouble is I can’t see you very often, but I understand everything so things are O.K.
as I sit here writing, the desk is right in front of a big window looking out to the high way, and as you know how cars travel, and going someplace. so very body don’t sit around all day, but my days are over with just so I can stay well and take care of myself is all I ask. but to-day I have many memories and thank God for the good and great son he brought me. all I do is say Happy Birthday and keep the good works going, may prays are always with you.
all my love,
Mother

Dearest LeRoy and Janet; -- Why don’t I hear from you, hope everyone is O.K., here in our 10 below zero weather its not to [too] funny, often I don’t go out, when only skipping Fridays because I have to eat no matter what.
We sure have carnival weather which is going full swing here, and I have to stay indoors, and we still have 2 more months to go, I should go down town to get my glasses fixed, but I am not able to make it in this cold weather.
I keep up with thins on the radio, and newspapers, and I have to get news about you from Brent, or Baskfield I should say, he seems to be the one that gets the news, so please write me it will also help me with my health, I get pretty lonely here along all of the time, pretty sure I’ll (be) talking to myself just to hear a voice.
Well as there is no news from here /
I sign off, and please let me hear from in some way or form, it will also help my health to hear from you, hope you are well and going strong,
God bless and guide you well.
all of my love – Mother

Sunday, Marc. 5th P.M. (1978)
Dearest LeRoy + Janet; -- First of all I am more than sorry I couldn’t come with the Baskfield’s to see you, but I was grounded sick, so I layed [laid] here thinking of you, it would have been so much fun, and good company to go with, I just talked to Brent and they really enjoyed the stay with you, he is really crazy about the painting you did, hope I can see it someday, but to [too] bad he had car trouble, poor (car) sitting on the highway, he went and got it to-day, they really was [were] happy about the painting and nice lunch Janet fixed so they come [came] back two very happy people, only I guess his car made him unhappy, how its my turn to say thank you for making them happy, he loved your place and everything, hope soon I can see the painting you did of him, he said after he got it framed he’d see that I could see it.
I hope by tomorrow I’ll be able to do my laundry, I have 3 weeks of clothes to wash, right now I am listening to a opera on the radio, beautiful singing, how I’d love to go to a [an] opera again, this has been an awful winter for me, my Arthritis sure don’t like the cold and snow we are having and its really been cold, and there is at least 4 more weeks of it. I tell you the Baskfield’s really enjoy themselves at your place and as happy as (a) child is about a new toy of his panting. and Florence is a nice person, and you should see these two little boys of his, they always remind (me) of you and Earl at that age. but soon they will grow up and are gone. but there is always wonderful memories, no matter where they go. /
I don’t know if I told you that Ben is in the hospital had a stroke, but is getting better, but wonder if he will be able to drive the car or live by himself when he gets out of the hospital, so I have no driver to take me shopping, and do things for me. so I don’t really know yet how I’ll be able to manage everything, on top of my own troubles, sure will be glad when spring comes along. at least I can go out.
Well guess this is it for now, wonder how I’d get it in the mail, hope the mail man stops at my place to-morrow and picks it up.
Takes care, God bless and guide you in all your doings, all my love to you both.

Dear LeRoy:
Thank you LeRoy it was an honor to be included in the many activities during your visit to St Paul and it was a privilege indeed to witness the sensitivity of your great painting, as well as the opportunity to view so many of your paintings. You always were a wonder boy – and may you continue onward into infinite.
I too am indebted to you for the opportunity to meet and to mingle with you and your elite friends and admirers. And if I offended or embarrassed you in any way – verbal or action – I humbly apologize.
There (was) never a time or place when I could express my personal admiration, however, it is [?] share always be – silently.
Any comments that I made to Mr. Baskfield was greatly misconstrued to you by your mother your mother is unaware of the fact that I overheard her side of [the] telephone conversation with you. It was cruel and dishonest. I was deeply distrusted yet I remained silent – and I shall forget it.
My affection for you began many years before you became famous, and it will be there always. I need say no more – we both are aware of the past.
My philosophy is – to proceed onward – you cannot change the yesterday.
Thank you LeRoy, for the personal message on the print.
I shall have it framed and hung, and also thank for the posters

Dearest LeRoy + Janet; -- Received your short, but sweet letter and hope you are home now, and of course busy, I am so down lonesome I could die, also kind of tired now, I was out and shoveled off the snow piled up on the out side basement steps, the show always drifts up there, and it takes forever and a day to melt, so now even if we get more snow the old stuff is gone. its beautiful day today with 40 degrees, sun shining, I am going to try to go down town to-morrow on the bus, I have to get my glasses straightened out and maybe I can see better, Ben came home from the Hospital a few days ago, he is staying with his niece because he can’t stay along yet, but he walks pretty good, and can use his hands good, but the doctor don’t want him to live alone yet. I believe I am in a worse state than he is, my hands are really bad its hard for me to hold things or do different things, also a lot of pain in them, my legs are pretty good, only hope we won’t get any more snow, as the ice is melting pretty good. then it won’t be bad to walk. but we still have some winter weather coming here any way.
Hope I can go to mass on Easter Sunday if we don’t get some more snow, I’ll be able to make it. no news to tell you, just wanted to write a line in answer to your letter, try and write me more often I get pretty lonely around here, and it always cheers me up, tell me the latest, etc. take care, God bless and guide you well, all my love to both of you,
mother. /
P.S. Wed. morning, and I am really under the weather to-day, so I’ll just have to lay around, had a little breakfast, hope I’ll be better soon, can’t afford to be sick these days to [too] much to do. another beautiful day outside, so I’ll just have to look at it for now.
Hope the mail man stops at my house so this will get on its way. cheerio for now.

Dearest LeRoy + Janet; --
Well its all over, not only Christmas, but old Truman is also done, that all you hear on the radio, not that I am not sorry but its better for him. I was thinking of you all day yesterday, picturing you at Great Gorge, that lovely place. but I had a pretty good day, all in all, of course I went to mass, then the young couple next door ask[ed] me over, you know their little girl Jeni is very close to me, of course she is growing up is 11 years old now, so we had a turkey dinner and different kind of drinks, which I didn’t drink to [too] much of as it seems now days they don’t (like) me, my stomach don’t feel good the day after, they have a tree and everything that goes with Christmas and chicken, so was not alone after all, I guess they kind of feel sorry for me, and we talked about you of course, and your work, they hope to see you someday. I am writing this letter on the stationary I got from Marlys at least she took care of it, and I don’t know why she sent me two boxes, and that was all, but I know how it was for her and all excited about going to be with Earl, I hope they had a (good) Christmas, being to-gether meant a great deal to him, the last letter I had from Earl he didn’t really know what they were going to do, he hoped to be by themselves didn’t want to go to their friends house, with kids and all, when I talked to you on the phone, I forgot to thank you for the check, it was wonderful. /
and the home made card that you [and] Janet made, thank you from my heart you are so good and kind to me, I don’t know yet how I’ll spend it. I get so excited when you call I always forget what to say, its so wonderful to hear you[r] voice, how we have New Years coming up and I am sure I will not take part of the wild life, I’ll go to mass maybe stay up long enough to hear the bells, but when a person is all alone its hard to stay up that long. and the real meaning of it, is not the choice that half drunk people make, so I’ll start the New Year the [quiet] way.
But yesterday I kept thinking of you, and all the other Christmas in the past, there has been some happy ones. I hope the toaster will be of some use one place or the other, I keep thinking of your house at Great Gorge what a place to have a family Christmas in, some day you will have it. I hope, everything is there to work with. I am day dreaming for you.
so now I’ll wait to hear from you from Chicago and I wish you luck and Happiness for the New Year this should get to you buy Sat. and you will be back in N.Y. will be thinking of and praying for you as always.
God bless and guide you in all your doings:
all my love to both of you.
