Title

Note on Art

Subject

A note from LeRoy Neiman on his process and aesthetic.

Description

This note from LeRoy Neiman provides insight into the artist’s process. Written in third person objective, the note abstracts this process into a few major concepts—e.g. “visual lexicon”, “immediate environment”, and “personal examination of the complexity of the cultural landscape”. This catalogue of sorts then points to not only the artist’s interests in art-making but also contradictions inherent to his work. Neiman was attentive to both motif and realism, positioning himself inside and outside the scene, as well as the tensions between the personal and the cultural.
