Title

Note on Art

Subject

A note from LeRoy Neiman on teaching and boxing.

Description

This note from LeRoy Neiman weaves between an abbreviated assessment of pedagogy and an anecdotal musing on boxing. Although the juxtaposition was most likely not made in an effort to draw comparison, a clear congruity between the two emerges around Neiman's language of action, activity, and keen observation. It is moments such as these that the artist's overarching concerns seem to reveal themselves.

You’ll discover if you can draw fast—render—copy—swipe—catch a likeness, etc.
I suggest you concentrate on your strong points—develop them. As you do the lesser aspects will catch up.
I also discovered along the years that I could draw off TV and live on TV
(Binoculars)
and in the dark (Ali story before the Bonavena MSG fight.)
(You make love in dark or light)
Also, no matter how and what I draw it always turns out a Neiman.
