Subject

LeRoy Neiman's courtesy card for Studio 54, an infamous nightclub located at 254 West 54th Street in New York, New York.

Description

This courtesy card for Studio 54, an infamous nightclub frequented by New York's haut monde, evidences LeRoy Neiman's interest in the leisure class. The venue - accredited as having a formative role in the development of disco - has a unique history: it was first opened as an opera house, Gallo Theatre, in the late 1920s, became CBS's radio and televison stage in the 1940s, and eventually transitioned into a nightclub in the 1977; the club then changed ownership on multiple occassions. When Neiman received membership, Studio 54's guest list was studded with the likes of Andy Warhol, Calvin Klein, Cary Grant, Gloria Vanderbilt, Gina Lollobrigida, and Brooke Shields, among others.
