Title

Note on Art

Subject

A note from LeRoy Neiman on a selection of commercial partnerships.

Description

This note from LeRoy Neiman touches on a few commercial relationships the artist formed during his career. Presented in a somewhat narrative form, the artist describes moving from painting and sketching at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, under Burger King, to doing Wheaties boxes for the Minneapolis-based company General Mills. The last section, touches on the mural at the St. James Theater in New York Neiman was asked to do for the Broadway show, Busker Alley. (Unfortunately, the show was cancelled before its premier at the theater; Neiman’s mural was eventually painted over.) The note was most likely made in preparation for the artist’s memoir, All Told.

1973 Breakfast of Champions
(2) I took to the proposal remembering the Burger King project I did in conjunction with the 1976 Montreal Olympics. (AT THAT Time) I did a series of Olympic events like track and field, swimming, etc. (A rewarding experience because) 20 this day, I am approached in public and by mail by people 30 years and older who still have the images (which were) offered at giveaways, during the games (with purchase of Burger King hamburgers). Some (KIDS) kept them (RIGHT THROUGH) on to their (dorm) walls through college now have them in their rooms. Some (MOST just remember them as their introduction to art.) So a Wheaties campaign out of my old hometown (the twin cities General Mills towns neighborhood town) Minneapolis looked seemed (was) exactly The project went well, the (painting of the) likeness of the athletes (IN ACTION) were printed on the (orange Wheaties) boxes and distributed.
A press conference was scheduled for the All-Star Café in Times Sq. but (Walter Payton?) a Chicago Bear running back (from the past) balked over some racial issue that ([]?) between he and the Company General Mills. The [?] was scratched (cancelled). The program was carried out but with much less(er) resulted than expected

show biz is show biz and the show must go on, but another show. (No questions asked) within hours
Forum was in rehearsal and scheduled to open as a replacement
It was fun and hard work. Too bad it turned out as it did.
1997 was that kind of year. (Fran and Barri Weisler) producers of an upcoming Broadway musical now in Busher Ally commissioned me to (do) a painting on the façade of the theatre to attract attention to the (which) was going in about a month.
I got a gifted sign painter from who had proved himself doing among many other outstanding wall Joe [?] which were remarkable, if disgusting, depictions.
Also serving as an assistant and talented Chinese painter from (Wan Lee) collaboratively we finished the wall in about some three weeks to meet the opening date.
The out of nowhere star dancer Tony [?] breaks his ankle in a freak accident in . The play is cancelled. Unemotionally the wall is painted over to make room for the replacement mural. “On the way to the Forum” Done.
