Title

Note on Art

Subject

A note from LeRoy Neiman linking a childhood interest in art and his later public presence.

Description

This note from LeRoy Neiman gives a brief assessment of his artistic development, linking his involvement in art to an early childhood interest. The chronology provided is divided into four sections: childhood, being a student, a professional artist, as well as a general discussion about popularity and critical reception. It is one of many touching on childhood as well as critical reception, but one of the few joining the two subjects. The note was made in preparation for the artist’s memoir, All Told.

AS A KID I ALWAYS DREW ALONE
EXPECTIGN NO TIPS – HELP – OR CRITICISM
WORKIGN WITH A CONCENTRATION SIMILAR TO TODAYS KID WITH HIS COMPUTER.
NO APPROVAL NECESSARY – ON MY OWN
LATER AS A STUDENT I WAS OFTENTIMES UNRECEPTIVE TO FACULTY HELP OR PRAISE WHEN I FOUND TEACHER ASSISTANCE BROKE MY CONCENTRATION AND (I) REGARDED IT AS INTERFERENCE.
LATER AS A PROFESSIONAL, IMPUT FROM SUPPORTERS, BUYERS, MARKETERS, DELATERS WAS AS IS OUT OF THE QUESTION.
TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT MY MOTTO.
AS A KID I DID NOT SEEK OR REQUIRE AN AUDENCE OR APPROVAL OF MY WORK.
PERHAPS NOW AS AN ADULT MY NEED TO COMMUNICATE OR BE VIEWED BY MAXIMUM EYES IS BECAUSE I NEVER RECRUITED ANY ATTENTION TO MY WORK OR CARED ON WAY OR ANTOHER – AS A RESULT I NEVER HAD ANY AUDIENCE – except at school
(ARTISTS) COMMENCE SUBJECTIVE
WIND UP OBJECTIVE
RESULT –
(THE WORK) DEVELOPED SOLELY ON MY TERMS AND EXECUTED THUSLY ONCE COMPELETED IS INTENDED TO BE COMMUNICATED TO AS WIDE AND DIVERSE AUDIENCE AS MODERN TECHNOLOGY MAKES POSSIBLE.
I did haul 3 or 4 outstanding teachers and a half-dozen who gave tips and view I still call on or recall /
