Notes on Art

Subject

A personal note from LeRoy Neiman on artistic reference, specifically with regards to casino culture in Las Vegas.

Description

This note from LeRoy Neiman provides a rich visual description of workers in Las Vegas. The document, titled “Baccarat,” is one of many notes the artist wrote on gambling and more specifically the aesthetics of the city. In addition, the record, framing the workers as largely overlooked, speaks to Neiman's overarching interest in work, class, and leisure culture.

Unlikely to be seen seated in this august company are the small-time insider runners (to whom) Las Vegas offers employment.
These classic graduate hoodlums drive around town in Mercedes as gophers on errand form one casino to another, or to construction sites, make collections, here maybe an airport pick-up there. – whatever.
They are privileged to courtesy assured access parking everywhere or anywhere thanks to that “HANDICAPPED’ permit sticker on their cars windshields or attached to the front license plate.
These indispensable on-DUTY male-factors learned their trade well and established credibility (going) back to the days of Bugsy Siegle.
