Title

Note on Art

Subject

A note from LeRoy Neiman on art, sports, and divinity.

Description

This diffuse note from LeRoy Neiman looks at the cultural linkages between art and sports. Specifically, the writing touches on the kind of so-called transcendental dimension of spectacle that unites the two activities. For example, in the note the artist compares the “Museum” to the “Sports Hall of Fame”. In addition, Neiman touches on the social reach of his work, referencing the large-scale distribution made possible through print runs. That said, it is unclear where exactly Neiman positions the artist. (He writes, “Association with art – painting, films makes sports achievements an absolute—The athletes are revered as Gods because the artist is doing Gods work.”)
