Subject
The topic of the resource
A selection of LeRoy Neiman's press passes and courtesy cards.
Description
An account of the resource
This collection features a selection of LeRoy Neiman’s club cards and press passes. A fan of travel and lover of sports, the artist was known for sketching at athletic events and cultural happenings. Neiman garnered public attention after recording the 1972 Work Chess Championship, Soviet Boris Spassky verses American Bobby Fischer, via sketch; Fischer had requested that all cameras be removed under the auspices the lens click was a distraction. This watershed moment increased Neiman’s already public presence, with ABC Sports taking notice. A ‘Sports Artist’ was born.

That said, the artist was no more interested in sports than he was in life, work, and leisure. These complimentary concerns are then disclosed by this collection. Press credentials for the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo are found alongside a set pass for Rocky IV. A New York Mets ID is grouped with a club card from the cradle of disco, Studio 54. And a courtesy card for Los Angeles mainstay Beverly Hills Hotel and Bungalows, the inspiration for Neiman’s Polo Lounge, is sorted with one from Upper East Side supper club, Tatou.

Description

This pass for the Can-Am 1970 auto race at Circuit Mont-Tremblant / Saint Jovite in Quebec, Canada, granted LeRoy Neiman photojournalistic privileges. LeRoy Neiman's courtesy card for MGM Grand Air, a charter airline owned by MGM Grand Inc., the global hospitality and entertainment company now operating as MGM Resorts International.
Description
An account of the resource
This membership card for MGM Grand Air, a VIP charter airline focused on small luxury flights, attests to LeRoy Neiman's interest in travel and the leisure class. The airline, founded in 1987, had a short run; with an increase of cheaper private jets, the venture lost many high profile customers and was sold to a small Minnesota-based company, rebranded as Champion Air, in 1994. LeRoy Neiman, Passes and Courtesy Cards

The topic of the resource
LeRoy Neiman's club card for The Beverly Hills Hotel and Bungalows in Beverly Hills, California.
Description
An account of the resource
This club card for The Beverly Hills Hotel and Bungalow in Beverly Hills, California proves indicative of not only LeRoy Neiman's intimacy with the establilshment but also his interest in leisure culture and travel; this interest was first stoked by the artist's 1960s European tour, "Man at His Leisure" (MAHL), sponsored by Playboy. As indicated by the courtesy card, the artist was a frequent guest at Beverly Hills Hotel, the local being the reference for his iconic Polo Louge, a work featuring at range of celebrities and reproduced in the 1988 December issue of Playboy. His visits to the hotel began in the early 1970s, following his many trips to Lost Angeles in the early 1970s and joint exhibiton with Henry Fonda at Upstairs Gallery, a gallery based in Beverly Hills proper, in 1977.

INSERT
[In] 1979 After a relaxed lunch at 21 film maker Ken Zaren and I were short cutting across central park on foot headed for The West Side [///]
We (having) recently returned from a shoot on the Riviera
were not on the lookout for anything special let along something that would provide inspiration. But there is no assurance in New York that something unexpected will not turn up.
It was a balmy day as we strode.
(along a path running from one of the curving streets that snake through the park) Pausing for a light around a bend came
2 Bike cops followed by an open [convertible] then a sedan. The short convoy glided to a halt at the same traffic signal. There seated in the first car in all white creating almost radiating light – Pope Paul II looking straight at us. Frozen in our tracks I swear that as the light turned green and they purred away the Pope actually looked back over his shoulders.
Ken a devout Catholic was enthralled as was I. We had just communicated at close range what amounted to what was like a private audience with Pope Paul III.
Along back in my studio the surprise encounter struck. I could not shake the brief memory NOR DID I TRY. I was in the process of painting a panoramic view of Manhattan result of sketches made from the 86th floor of the Empire State Building, a horizontal composition starting at 42nd ST at the lower and from the Library and Bryant Park up 5th Ave beyond Central Park to Harlem,
Flanked by the rivers on either side of the island. /
Since the Pope had flown from Rome to Kenney on a TWA commercial flight (A FIRST) that brought about a travel with THE Angles promotion he belongs
IN THE PICTURE HIS ITINERARY STARTED WITH A sensational New York visit
So I decided I’d put him in the painting.
He’d be flying over midtown Manhattan
So I had him floating in the air above the skyscrapers like a Thanksgiving day parade float. It worked.
THE POPE AS A FLOTE [sic]. I placed him airborn [sic] buoyantly SUSPENDED OVER Midtown the spires of St Patricks back to his left. Vulnerable, sensational object of public attention that he was it all seemed
so logical

Description
An account of the resource
This note from LeRoy Neiman provides an anecdotal account of the artist's reference to Pope John Paul II. Neiman spotted the Pope after returning to New York from a film shoot in the Riviera in 1981. Internalizing this encounter, the artist included the figure in a urban panorama, flying between the spires of Saint Patrick's Cathedral in Midtown. Years later, Neiman removed the Pope from the work, painting him out. The note was most likely made in preparation for the artist's memoir, All Told.

Description
An account of the resource
This note from LeRoy Neiman looks at “Moresque Ornamentation,” specifically that of the Alhambra. Overall, the record seems to engage ideas of cultural synchronism, discussions of symbolism, and more concrete notions of color and infrastructure. But due to the document’s brevity, the engagement is somewhat cursory. The purpose of the record remains unknown.

A note from LeRoy Neiman made in preparation for his Busker Alley mural at the St. James theatre in 1995.

Description
An account of the resource
This note was of a few from LeRoy Neiman made in preparation for his prospective mural at the St. James Theatre. The venue, which was set to host Busker Alley, invited the artist to paint the facade of the building in lieu of a billboard. That said, the broadway show was cancelled before its premier at the theater. Neiman’s mural was eventually painted over.

The document itself includes a list of artworks engaging public space, including Matisse’s famed chapel in on the French Riviera, frescos in Rome and Venice, and Thomas Hart Benton’s murals. At the bottom of the record, he has written in red marker and capital letters, “[I’ve] often thought about stuff like stage sets and murals. But you have to be asked. So I’ve been more than anything an easel painter.” The comment is a bit out of place, seeing Neiman was invited to paint the very piece.

This document itself provides a list of pieces and forms of work engaging public space. And the collection is geographically diffuse, touching on Egypt, New York, Italy, and Mexico. The record also mentions Neiman’s own experience painting a mural at the Donut Dugout while stationed in Eupen, Belgium during WWII, as well as another at Sportsman’s Park in Saint Louis.

VENICE – AMSTERDAM
(A)
My paintings are in some small way a study of elites (and the poor). Being in (a) way a sociological authority NOT by education but simply that of an observer of human behavior. A product of the lower classes I feel confident of understanding my lower class background and a beneficiary of many adventures and misadventures mingling curiously among the (privileged) selection and (the) have nots.
I have studied (thru observing and) thru the medium of drawing and painting relationships between the haves and the have-nots thru personal (socializing) and fraternizing while both wile seriously at paly. A dominant element (ever necessary to both).
PLAY (in the dominants) subject matter of my work. The Dutch society bears comparison to the Venetian society as do the Asian and Western societies do today.
You cannot mature and be a part of the US today without comparing it (to) other cultures which either copy Western ways or despise them. But while the elite are at all times the elite when they play their games intermural or internationally.
([?] Jews) great wealth. Supplied the means which (necessary) food, play, munitions, with international connections
(the have and the have mores a quantity)

The topic of the resource
A note from LeRoy Neiman relating subject matter depicted to the study of sociology.
Description
An account of the resource
This note from LeRoy Neiman looks at his work in relation to sociology, specifically positioning the subject matter depicted as an exploration of class. Although this note is not singular in expressing this opinion, it is one of the only which explicitly connects this interest to personal biography. Neiman grew up in a midwestern working class household during the Great Depression. In addition to this discussion of personal interest, the artist extrapolates his sentiments, asserting that since the advent of modern capitalism, the “elite are at all times the elite… intramural or internationally.” As homogenizing as this comment might seem, it reiterates the artist’s interest in sociology.
