Note on Art
A personal note from LeRoy Neiman on art.
This note from LeRoy Neiman details his personal relationship with the Metropolitan (Met) Opera House at Lincoln Center. The artist moved to New York, specifically to the Upper West Side, in the 1963, three years before Wallace Harrison's design was complete. Neiman was interested in the site not only for its architectural grace but also the establishment's glamorous crowds and connection to leisure culture. The note was most likely made in preparation for the artist's memoir, All Told.

Note on Art
A personal note from LeRoy Neiman on artistic reference, specifically Spanish Romanticist Francisco Goya and bullfighting.
This note from LeRoy Neiman provides a list of artistic references, particularly work from artist Francisco Goya; a preponderance of the pieces cited depict bullfighting.

Neiman made a collection of works engaging bullfighting and bull dodging including, Adriano, World Champion Bull Rider On Little Yellow Jacket, which was widly distributed through Knoedler Publishing as posters and prints. That said, the majority of Neiman's works were rendered on site, with the artist both sketching and painting contests in the flesh as well as using these live materials for studio-based paintings. (Neiman attended many bull events accross the US as well as in Spain and Mexico.) This note then provides insight into the artist's more art historical interest in the animal and the sport, but should not be seen as total.

Note on Art
A personal note from LeRoy Neiman, linking his work to that of English artist William Hogarth.
This note from Leroy Neiman builds on a previous remark the artist made about William Hogarth. The front side of the envelope, on which Neiman's comment was written, provides a list of Hogarth’s works the artist took particular interest in, including Shrimp Girl (1740-45). Beyond this list, Neiman provides a brief definition of aestheticism in addition to the remark, “Neiman[’s] art addresses the relationship between man at/and Play and Play and the artist.” The note itself is entitled “Art / Hogarth.” The envelope’s reverse then expands on the subjects of aesthetics and play, with the activity of painting largely framed a creative and stylistic enterprise (i.e. [Neiman is] “enthralled with color density to advance or recede - to animate - rhythms"). This entry is one of the most comprehensive personal assessments of form found on Neiman’s behalf.

Overall, the note itself is a bit of an oddity. Hogarth, a satirist, clearly had an interest in humor and play, but not necessarily color. And Neiman, however, seems to be saying his works’ process and animation somewhat singularly stems from color. Whatever the artist’s intention with the pairing, the comments offer insight not only into Neiman’s admiration for his predecessor but also his understanding of his own artwork.

Note on Art
A personal note from LeRoy Neiman on the works of English artist William Hogarth.
This note from LeRoy Neiman is one of a selection the artist took on William Hogarth. Hogarth, an English satirist, had a profound interest in the common man and a playful scorn for the British aristocracy. This record contains a list of Hogarth’s works, including The Gate of Calais or The Roast Beef of Old England (1748), Cockpit (1759), and Shrimp Girl (1740-45); Neiman had a particular interest in Shrimp Girl. Scribbled out on the notecard's reverse, Neiman made a list of his own works. Although the parallel between the artists' respective pieces is not apparent, the form implies kinship. The record is one of many in which Neiman positions himself in relation to Hogarth.

Note on Art
A personal note from LeRoy Neiman on English artist William Hogarth.
This note from LeRoy Neiman is a brief citation of William Hogarth's engraving Cockpit (1759). The record provides no personal annotation outside direct reference. That said, Cockpit was acquisitioned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1891. Neiman, living and working in New York's Upper West Side first saw the work there, endowing the piece with a personal connection. Neiman, an advid printmaker and lover of Hogarth, would often visit the museum's print collection.

Note on Art
A note from LeRoy Neiman on artistic reference, specifically the prints of English caricaturist Thomas Rowlandson.
This note from LeRoy Neiman on Thomas Rowlandson looks at the role of printmaking in the former artist's career. Unlike most of Neiman's writings on art, this particular record provides a more detailed account of print processes. In addition to this delineation, he places the works in the artist’s oeuvre according to both public perception at the time and personal aesthetic judgment. Rowlandson’s prints were very influential on Neiman’s style.

Note on Art
A note from LeRoy Neiman, reflecting on his artistic career.
This note from LeRoy Neiman reflects on his artistic style and career. Unlike many preceding artists—such as the Abstract Expressionist (who can be seen as the first commercially successful group of American artists)—Neiman insists on his work’s integration into the prevailing cultural ethos, writing, “My motifs of the social action of the times observed by my eye and delimited by my hand will live on evidencing my high regard for the public.” This statement then touches on the artist’s interest not so-called individual expression (although he does mention his “hand” and “eye” as producer) but his closeness to a predominant culture and lifestyle—America’s pulse. The second part of the document, written as a kind of elongated footer, is a commentary on the artist’s silkscreens. Neiman is widely remembered through his posters and prints which gained, and maintained, mass appeal. The writing then reiterates this popularity. Below this record, he provides a brief history of prints.

Note on Art
A note from LeRoy Neiman on the aesthetics of commedia dell'arte.

This note from LeRoy Neiman gives a brief overview of the cultural bearing and ambiance of commedia dell’arte. The document references Francisco Goya’s Los Comicos Ambulantes (The Strolling Players)—a painting displaying jubilant a dell’arte thespians exiting the curtain and entering the stage—as well as mentioning Molière, whose writings drew heavily from this theatrical tradition. In addition, Neiman makes the comment, “a brilliant page from the past / [Astonishing] wealth of bright colors / chromic perception - translucent.” Although this is most likely a description of Goya’s work, it could also be a digestion of a passage from Molière, an assessment of the theatrical tradition more generally, interpretation of Carnival (which Neiman often conflated with the commedia dell'arte, due to their proximity), or positing of the artist’s own style. The record was written in tandem with another note, describing this traditions.

A note from LeRoy Neiman, providing a brief chronology for his biography and career.
This note from LeRoy Neiman provides a brief overview of the artist’s biography and career. The document divides his life into themes—ranging from receiving the GI Bill to moving to New York—grounded in chronology. Given the stylistic bend and emphasis on time-based sequence, the bullet points were mostly likely early chapter titles for the artist's memoir, All Told. The second page features a list of long-form videos and an index of unedited footage in which Neiman appeared.
