Description
An account of the resource
LeRoy Neiman’s notes on art encompasses the artist’s comments on art generally as well as his personal process, career and critical reception, style, and artistic reference. Although this collection provides insights into Neiman’s perception of art’s role in life and work, its extent is not final. The artist’s musings on the subject spill over to other records, such as his thoughts on childhood, travel, sports, food culture, and class politics.

The majority of these documents were made in preparation for the artist’s memoir, All Told.

[9/ THE SPECTATOR LOOKING AT A PAINTING OF MINE MUST ALWAYS DEAL WITH AN ORCHESTRATION OF BROKEN COLORS. MY PAINTINGS ARE A CHOAS OF COLORS, AND INTERMINGLING OF COLORS, MY COLORS HAVE BEEN CALLED BY MY DETRACTORS PAW, BRASSY, LOUD—NOISY. THAT THEY OFTENTIMES ARE, AS THEY SLANT, HALT, SPIRAL, JUMP, AND HIGHLIGHT. / THEY ARE USED AS EYE-LURE AND TO DELINEATE – THE SAME PATCH OF COLOR IN ONE CASE WILL IDENTIFY AND IN OTHER WILL MERELY FORM ATMOSPHERE. THEIR APPLICATION IS VERY DIRECT AND HIGH KEY, AND THE COLORS MERGE OR OVERLAP AT DIFFERENT DISTANCES INTO REALITY. / RECOGNITION OF KEY ELEMENTS IN MY PAINTINGS IS SOMETIMES DIFFICULT BECAUSE OF A CERTAIN INTENTIONAL LACK OF CLEARNESS. SOME IMPORTANT ELEMENTS ARE FREQUENTLY REPRESSED AND LESSER ONES OFTEN STRESSED, IN ORDER TO BRING OUT THE MAIN INGREDIENTS IN A[N] OBSCURE WAY. THE IDEA IS NOT TO BE VAUGE, BUT TO MAKE CLARITY LOOK AS IF IT JUST HAPPENED. AN AVERTED OR SHADOWED FACE OR PERHAPS AN UNSEEN HAND BEHIND THE BACK MAY CONTAIN A CENTRAL EXPRESSION OR GESTURE. / I SEEK TO MAKE THE TASK OF THE SPECTATOR INCREASINGLY DIFFICULT. I SET TRAPS FOR HIM. MODELING TAKES PLACE WHERE EMPHASIS DOES NOT LIE: ACCENTS ARE SUBORDINATED; FOREGROUND AND BACKGROUND MERGE TURBULENTLY. AS ONE ADVANCES ON MY PAINTINGS, THEY BECOME MORE ABSTRACT, MORE FLUID. AS ONE MOVES AWAY, THEY FALL INTO FOCUS AND REVEAL ANOTHER ASPECT OF REALITY. THE SPECTATOR DISCOVERS NEW SUBSTANCES]
AND HAS A PROLONGED CONTACT. /
[10 / AT NO TWO DISTANCES WILL THE PAINTINGS APPEAR THE SAME. THIS GIVES THE VIEWER MORE ROOM FOR CONJECTURE, AND HIS CONTRIBUTION TO THE VISUAL IMAGE, UPON CONTEMPLATION, ADD TO ITS PROVOCATIVE SCHEME. THERE IS A MESSAGE HERE: TODAY’S MAN ACCEPTS MANY CASUAL OBSERVATION]S [AT FACE VALUE, BUT OFTEN THE TRUTH ESCAPES HIM IF HE DOESN’T TAKE THE TIME TO LOOK LONGER AND HARDER. I NEVER LOSE SIGHT OF THE PERIPHERAL AND BEYOND. / YOU MAY HAVE PICKED UP ON MY, AT TIMES, USING THE TERM SPECTATOR RATHER THAN VIEWER IN REFERRING TO THE CONFRONTING MY WORK. I HAVE A HUNCH THEY GET THE FEELING THEY ARE IN SOME SPECIAL EVENT WHEN THEY STOP IN FRONT OF A PAINTING OF MINE. / THE ARTIST, LIKE THE PEASANT OR CHILD, MUST SEE UP CLOSE, INDEED HE MUST SEE OT BELIEVE. IN MY PAINTINGS I CONCENTRATE ON THE EXTERIOR. IN STRESSING THE SURFACE I BELIEVE I CAN REVEAL WHAT IS UNDER THE SURFACE BY WHAT I DEVELOP ON MY SURFACE. I FOCUS ON THE OUTSIDE, ON THE LOOK WHICH CAN BE CALLED SUPERFICIAL. MY TREATMENT IS CURSORY, WITH DETAILS ONLY HALF-SAID, REVEALING MYSELF MORE THAN THE SUBJECT. I DO NOT OVERSUPPLY INFORMATION BUT I DO PRESENT IT EXTRAVAGANTLY.]
TOLSTOY – TO Be a work of art it must be understood by the peasant /
11
[MY PAINTINGS ARE CHARGED WITH A SIMPLICITY AND FREEDOM. I USE RAPIDITY IN MY DESCRIPTIONS OF PEOPLE AND EVENTS, TO CATCH THE MOVEMENTS AND MOODS. MY PERFORMANCE REQUIRES DEXTERITY, VIRTUOSITY, SPEED; THE POWER OF SUGGESTION, THE HALF-REVEALED, FULLY REALIZED ALL THE WHILE ONE MAY PAY A PRICE FOR CAPTURING THE FLEETING MOMENT: SHORT-LIVED PICTURES, A RISK WELL WORK TAKING. / IMMEDIACY, IN SHORT, IS EVERYTHING TO ME: THE CLOSE-UP EXPRESSIONS AND EMOTIONS AND ATTITUDES – THE STRAINS, THE GRUNTS, THE PHYSICALITY OF SPORT – THAT ALL IS MY NATURAL PRESERVE. I LOVE FEATURING THIS SORT OF STUFF IN MY WORKING SPACE. A SPACE IN WHICH THE SUBJECT CAN LIVE. I RECONSTRUCT THE VISUAL WORLD. IT IS MY PICTORIALITY. / THE VALIDITY OF REALISM IS THAT THE WORLD LOOKS DIFFERENT ALL THE TIME. EACH TIME REALISM REAPPEARS THROUGHOUT ART HISTORY, THINGS HAVE CHANGED TO THE EYE AND TO THE HIM. YOU SIMPLY DON’T APINT FAMILIAR OBJECTS AND ALWAYS RECORD THEM THE SAME THINGS] THE SAME WAY. [CHANGES OCCUR IN THE OBJECTS, AND IN THE ART FORM AS WELL. I THINK OF A SPORT TEN YEARS AGO WHICH PUZZLED EVERYBODY. TODAY IT IS A NORMAL PART OF OUR SEASIDE LIFE CALLED WIND SURFING OR SAIL BOARDING.] /
5
[AS AN ARTIST THIS MEANS TO ME THAT THE VIEWER MUST COME FIRST. THE AUDIENCE, TODAY ENLIGHTENED AND FAIR MINDED, IS THE PRIMARY CONCERN. / AN ARTIST IS A GARDENER, NOT A MINER HIS OR HER ROLE IS TO CULTIVATE. / A GOOD ARTIST IS AN INNOVATOR, NOT A CURATOR. A SUCCESSFUL ARTIST MUST BE IN PROCESS. HE CANNOT STOP AT ONE STAGE AND REMAIN FROZEN IN IT. HE MUST NOT EMBALM HIS WORK. / A BUSINESSMAN WILL OBSERVE: “IF I DON’T DO IT FIRST, SOMEONE ELES WLL.” AND ARTIST WILL OBSERVE: “IF I DON’T DO IT, NO ONE ELSE WILL.” / I OFTEN SAY THAT THE WAY WE JUDGE THE QUALITY OF AN ARTIST’S VISION IS THE DEGREE TO WHICH OUR VISION IS ALTERED BY HIS OR HER WORK. / WHAT THE VIEWER HAS TAKEN FOR GRANTED ALL ALONG, TO THE ARTIST, MAY BE A DISCOVERY. / PAINTING ATTRACTS ADMIRATION OF THINGS WHICH IN THEIR ORIGINAL STATE WE MIGHT NOT ADMIRE. / THE ARTIST DEMANDS RESPECT FOR THIS WORK OFTEN DONE UNDER LESS THAN IDEAL CIRCUMSTANCES.]

A personal note from LeRoy Neiman on his art.
Description
An account of the resource
This note, expanding on LeRoy Neiman's impression of spectatorship, sports art, and artistic process, is most likely a draft of the artist's catalogue essay for his monograph Winners: My Thrity Years in Sports published in 1983. The text seems ot build on another note Neiman entitled "Winning," fleshing out some of the this document's maxiums and tempering the poetic tone.

I penetrate in the subject observed from whatever distance (PANORAMIC)—6 ft.—10 yards—shoulder to shoulder—external.
How dressed, presented—movement, of a persona how they stand, sit or walk. Mannerisms, gestures, expression, attitudes, pretentions.
It can be a slant, an angle. A glimpse, prolonged external, all revealing (carriage) aspects of the inner person
Something it is necessary to stick one’s neck out rather than to embrace security
The art game looks for the new. So if that is the artist’s (creator’s) vent there is a receptive target. I prefer the familiar. I work every day seeking excellence, development, self-expression. If I have not drawn for several days, I get off center and try to regain the rhythm.
Sometimes (through persistence too much) I go stale and cannot get excited enough to work. At this point I do not wait for the mood. I just tie into doing it. I can capitalize on accidents and mistakes, but seek or defend them.

A note from LeRoy Neiman on portraiture and his artistic process.
Description
An account of the resource
This note from LeRoy Neiman reveals the artist’s thoughts on portraiture and his artistic process, more generally. The first section of the writing speaks to Neiman’s method of assessing a subject. (e.g. He writes, “I penetrate in in the subject observed from whatever distance.”) The majority of this analysis constitutes a discussion of physiognomy. The second section speaks to the kind of “everyday” aspects of Neiman’s work. Not only does the artist emphasize the literal everyday character of his practice (i.e. he makes work, largely, everyday) but it also more tacitly underlines his interest in the ordinary.

Description
An account of the resource
This note, with its poetic verse and range of refererences detailing LeRoy Neiman's interest in sports art, audience, and variable brushstrokes, is most likely an intital draft of the artist's catalogue essay for his monograph Winners: My Thrity Years in Sports published in 1983. Athough it is not certain this was the original function of the document, the subject matter and title "Winning" suggest so. In addition, the note was typed, indicating the record's intended purpose was professional. (Neiman wrote most of his personal notes by hand.) An interpolative edit from Lynn Quayle, the artist's longtime assistant, further validates this claim.

Description
An account of the resource
This personal note from LeRoy Neiman lists a range of the artist's references, including Armenian artist Jennie Augusta Brownscombe's Thanksgiving at Plymouth (1925). That said, it is unclear what Neiman is pointing to with the phrase, "Painting toenails and drawing tatoos on recycled paper with soy-based inks." The note was written on the reverse of a card the artist received from Boca Raton Resort and Club, notifying him of his premier status. This ambiguous remark could then reference guest or celebrity Neiman observed during his stay.

Irving Pelt bought “Introducing Champions in Madison Square Garden” then discovered I had mobster Frankie Carbo sitting ringside. I took his signature hat off[,] made one stroke of color on the face 11/2 inches high and it became Mayor Wagner.
Darreyl Zanack died before seeing the final result of a painting of him playing Polo I was commissioned to do. by him. so I changed him to Prince Philly.
I changed Paldo into Nichlaus, Nichlaus back to Paldo
Had a sketch of pitcher Jessie Orosco which I transferred (directly) to an etching plate—pulled it. (The imprint) only one. It didn’t look right.
Six months later I was commissioned to do a watercolor of Jessie which I did using an etching as my guide. I showed it on T.V. at home plate at the presentation ceremonies as he was [?] rightly rallier than Southpaw. Jessie broke up. I was embarrassed. Ralph Rainer referred [to] the error several times, during the game’s telecast—good natured, of course

I flew from Palm Springs (Dallas?) to O.K. Oklahoma City on a private wing [?] jet and with Red Skeleton, and he did 2 hours nonstop as he always does in performance
We sketched each other at high altitude and I realized why he has done hundreds of self-portraits (more than Rembrandt), because he is so distinctively easy to catch—an irresistible subject
Red and his wife Lothian did not like the sketch I did months ago, but really liked the one I did on the flight. There is a humanness [that comes from drawing] live that is absent [when] drawing from photos
I put on Clark Gable hat from GWTW and Wayne Newton ranch in Nevada. He convincingly said how great I looked and after [?] on being photographed feeling just like Clark and went to a mirror and was shocked to see myself and not Gable. /
His jokes – always leave last on a plane so people watching will think he’s flown first class.
Spray graffiti artists with paints – face and all
Herb Gruder restaurant “Al Shouts” The bar and dining room covered with my paintings and drawings. I always was a guest dining there. One nite a big water bug lumbered up the wall behind our baguette. I slowly took off [my] shoe and smashed it. Herb said that thanks.
When the place shuttered Herb made off with the artwork. One great one, Mickey Mantle switcher
