Note on Art
Subject
The topic of the resource
A personal note from LeRoy Neiman on the artwork of English artist William Hogarth.
Description
An account of the resource
This note from LeRoy Neiman provides a remark on artist Willam Hogarth. The record contains three sections: first, a comment on Hogarth’s class consciousness, second, anecdotal evidence of the artist’s draw to satire, and third, a citing of a study of <em>Shrimp Girl</em> (1740-45). <em>Shrimp Girl, </em>the painting, depicts a woman peddling shellfish, a job typically asigned to female relatives of fishmongers. This subject matter, diverging from the aristocratic portraiture that was in vogue, then testifies to Hogarth’s interest in the common man. Neiman, through writing this note, draws a connection between his work’s and his predecessor's, positioning himself in a lineage of illustration, satire, and attentiveness to class. The record was most likely for personal use.

The topic of the resource
A personal note from LeRoy Neiman, linking his work to that of English artist William Hogarth.
Description
An account of the resource
This note from Leroy Neiman builds on a <a href="http://leroyneimanfoundation.omeka.net/items/show/222">previous remark</a> the artist made about William Hogarth. The front side of the envelope, on which Neiman's comment was written, provides a list of Hogarth’s works the artist took particular interest in, including <i>Shrimp Girl </i>(1740-45). Beyond this list, Neiman provides a brief definition of <i>aestheticism </i>in addition to the remark, “Neiman[’s] art addresses the relationship between man at/and Play and Play and the artist.” The note itself is entitled “Art / Hogarth.” The envelope’s reverse then expands on the subjects of aesthetics and play, with the activity of painting largely framed a creative and stylistic enterprise (i.e. [Neiman is] “enthralled with color density to advance or recede - to animate - rhythms"). This entry is one of the most comprehensive personal assessments of form found on Neiman’s behalf.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>
<p class="p1">Overall, the note itself is a bit of an oddity. Hogarth, a satirist, clearly had an interest in humor and play, but not necessarily color. And Neiman, however, seems to be saying his works’ process and animation somewhat singularly stems from color. Whatever the artist’s intention with the pairing, the comments offer insight not only into Neiman’s admiration for his predecessor but also his understanding of his own artwork.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span></p>

A personal note from LeRoy Neiman on the works of English artist William Hogarth.
Description
An account of the resource
This note from LeRoy Neiman is one of a selection the artist took on William Hogarth. Hogarth, an English satirist, had a profound interest in the common man and a playful scorn for the British aristocracy. This record contains a list of Hogarth’s works, including <em>The Gate of Calais</em> or <em>The Roast Beef of Old England</em> (1748), <em>Cockpit</em> (1759), and <em>Shrimp Girl</em> (1740-45); Neiman had a particular interest in <em>Shrimp Girl</em>. Scribbled out on the notecard's reverse, Neiman made a list of his own works. Although the parallel between the artists' respective pieces is not apparent, the form implies kinship. The record is one of many in which Neiman positions himself in relation to Hogarth.

His adventures took him on a romantic flight from Prado where he was painting in a convent of nuns (taking with him a young) woman Lucrezia Buto and marrying her with the Popes permission. A son Fiellipino was born who became a noted painter.
Lippi swiped from other painters
He was constantly the techniques to realize his artist vision and new ideas which made him one of the appreciated artists of his time.

Note on Art
Subject
The topic of the resource
A personal note from LeRoy Neiman on art, specifically the work of Quattrocento Italian painter, Filippo Lippi.
Description
An account of the resource
This note from LeRoy Neiman provides a brief biography of 15th century Italian painter Filippo Lippi. The commentary is roughly divided into three sections: early life, influence and acclaim, and lastly critical reception. <br /><br />Lippi was not a predominate influence on Neiman’s own process. That said, the interest in figuration and narrative work provides a general overlap. Regardless of the kinship, or lack there of, the Neiman took fascination with Lippi’s life and work. In the note, he describes the Italian painter as “constantly the [swiping the] techniques [of other artists] to realize his artist vision and new ideas which made him one of the appreciated artists of his time.” As dubious as this statement might be, it should be seen as a compliment, while Neiman seems to be suggesting that Lippi possesses the ability to not only recognize his peers' innovations, but build of off them, incorporating these newfound ideas and tools into his own personal worldview. The critical feedback Neiman cites seems to support this reading, specifically that of Bernard Bereson. Bereson—the Renaissance specialist, and public intellectual—describes Lippi as (according to Neiman), “among the painters of genius – a high class illustrator expressing his importance of his expressive content.” Outside of this framing of Lippi as superlative, as genius, attention should be drawn to Neiman’s paraphrase of Bereson, terming Lippi as "expressive" and an "illustrator." This less explicit framing is most likely an attempt on the part of Neiman to forge kinship between his and Lippi’s work, with the former not only seeing himself as but coming from a background in Illustration as well as privileging the expressive. (Neiman studied fashion illustration at SAIC and worked for a design firm briefly, alongside having a longstanding relationship with <i>Playboy.</i>)

Description
An account of the resource
This note from LeRoy Neiman on Thomas Rowlandson looks at the role of printmaking in the former artist's career. Unlike most of Neiman's writings on art, this particular record provides a more detailed account of print processes. In addition to this delineation, he places the works in the artist’s oeuvre according to both public perception at the time and personal aesthetic judgment. Rowlandson’s prints were very influential on Neiman’s style.

A personal note from LeRoy Neiman on, specifically English artists Thomas Rowlandson and William Hogarth.
Description
An account of the resource
This note from LeRoy Neiman looks at work from English artists Thomas Rowlandson (1756-1827) and William Hogarth (1697-1764). Rowlandson and Hogarth were near-contemporaries with a comparable interest in class issues of 18th century England. This particular record is an abbreviated list of the artists’ respective social tableaus. Neiman had a longstanding investment in not only class issues but also a kind of “being-in-the-world,” often sketching and painting “live.” This artistic commitment to public life then links the figures. Although the list is in someways a registry of artistic reference, the document should not be seen as providing direct allusion to particular works or composition from Neiman. Instead, the note seems to suggest sort of art historical positioning of his own works in this vein of satire and class consciousness.

A note from LeRoy Neiman on artistic reference, specifically African American painter Jacob Lawerence.
Description
An account of the resource
This sprawling note from LeRoy Neiman on African American artist Jacob Lawrence provides discrete phrases linking the artists’ work. Lawrence (b. 1917) was focused on conveying the experience of black America through petite narrative paintings, often completed in series, pairing brown and black figures with brilliant geometries, which he saw as abstracted from Harlem's scenery and architecture. And although the artists’ works are stylistically distinct, Neiman saw an overlap between their interests, regarding a special attention to blue collar laborers, branding Lawrence's work with his recurrent phrase, “the dignity of the working class.”

A note from LeRoy Neiman on artistic reference, specifically Northern Renaissance painter Lucas Cranach the Elder.
Description
An account of the resource
This note from LeRoy Neiman provides a brief biography on the Northern Renaissance artist Lucas Cranach the Elder (b. 1472-1553). Cranach, German painter and printmaker, is primarily known for his portraiture of German nobility and persons from the Protestant Reformation; many of these works feature stylized figures, cropped from the waist up, set against flat colored backgrounds. The artist was also a close friend of Martin Luther. Although there is not much similarity with regards to style between Neiman and Cranach’s works, Neiman had a deep admiration for Cranach, specifically with regards to his interest in printmaking and attention to class, things Neiman saw as integral to his Neiman own practice. The artist then, with this note, is drawing a conceptual through line between their respective worldviews. The record was most likely written in preparation for Neiman's memoir, <em>All Told</em>.

A note from LeRoy Neiman on French Romanticist Anne-Louis Girodet de Roussy-Trioson.
Description
An account of the resource
This note from LeRoy Neiman details an artistic reference, specifically French Romanticist, Anne-Louis Girodet de Roussy-Trioson (6. 1767-1824). Girodet was a painter known for his narrative scenes and portraiture that broke with the then popular neoclassical form and often enfolded erotic elements; he is also remembered for painting many members of the Napoleonic family. Despite the brevity of this record, Neiman’s mention of “Bacchant”—most likely a work or allusion to a work by Girodet, featuring a "nude of Leopard skin"—can be seen as a dual denotation, referring not only to that of the erotic element in the French painter’s work but also Neiman’s own interest in the female form. Alongside drawing and painting an array of women—socialites, celebrities, among others—the artist also had recurrent illustration in <em>Playboy</em> magazine, beginning in 1955. This illustration, an addendum to the publication's “Party Jokes” column, featured a black-and-white nymph-like nude called "Femlin" (a merging of "female"<em> </em>and "gremlin"), typically engaging some sort of time-sensitive visual pun. The artist is most likely drawing a connection between Girodet’s “Bacchant” and this character. The note was most likely made in preparation for his memoir, <em>All Told</em>.
