Description
An account of the resource
This collection features a selection of LeRoy Neiman’s club cards and press passes. A fan of travel and lover of sports, the artist was known for sketching at athletic events and cultural happenings. Neiman garnered public attention after recording the 1972 Work Chess Championship, Soviet Boris Spassky verses American Bobby Fischer, via sketch; Fischer had requested that all cameras be removed under the auspices the lens click was a distraction. This watershed moment increased Neiman’s already public presence, with ABC Sports taking notice. A ‘Sports Artist’ was born.

That said, the artist was no more interested in sports than he was in life, work, and leisure. These complimentary concerns are then disclosed by this collection. Press credentials for the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo are found alongside a set pass for Rocky IV. A New York Mets ID is grouped with a club card from the cradle of disco, Studio 54. And a courtesy card for Los Angeles mainstay Beverly Hills Hotel and Bungalows, the inspiration for Neiman’s Polo Lounge, is sorted with one from Upper East Side supper club, Tatou.

Description
An account of the resource
This note from LeRoy Neiman details his personal relationship with the Metropolitan (Met) Opera House at Lincoln Center. The artist moved to New York, specifically to the Upper West Side, in the 1963, three years before Wallace Harrison's design was complete. Neiman was interested in the site not only for its architectural grace but also the establishment's glamorous crowds and connection to leisure culture. The note was most likely made in preparation for the artist's memoir, All Told.

INSERT
[In] 1979 After a relaxed lunch at 21 film maker Ken Zaren and I were short cutting across central park on foot headed for The West Side [///]
We (having) recently returned from a shoot on the Riviera
were not on the lookout for anything special let along something that would provide inspiration. But there is no assurance in New York that something unexpected will not turn up.
It was a balmy day as we strode.
(along a path running from one of the curving streets that snake through the park) Pausing for a light around a bend came
2 Bike cops followed by an open [convertible] then a sedan. The short convoy glided to a halt at the same traffic signal. There seated in the first car in all white creating almost radiating light – Pope Paul II looking straight at us. Frozen in our tracks I swear that as the light turned green and they purred away the Pope actually looked back over his shoulders.
Ken a devout Catholic was enthralled as was I. We had just communicated at close range what amounted to what was like a private audience with Pope Paul III.
Along back in my studio the surprise encounter struck. I could not shake the brief memory NOR DID I TRY. I was in the process of painting a panoramic view of Manhattan result of sketches made from the 86th floor of the Empire State Building, a horizontal composition starting at 42nd ST at the lower and from the Library and Bryant Park up 5th Ave beyond Central Park to Harlem,
Flanked by the rivers on either side of the island. /
Since the Pope had flown from Rome to Kenney on a TWA commercial flight (A FIRST) that brought about a travel with THE Angles promotion he belongs
IN THE PICTURE HIS ITINERARY STARTED WITH A sensational New York visit
So I decided I’d put him in the painting.
He’d be flying over midtown Manhattan
So I had him floating in the air above the skyscrapers like a Thanksgiving day parade float. It worked.
THE POPE AS A FLOTE [sic]. I placed him airborn [sic] buoyantly SUSPENDED OVER Midtown the spires of St Patricks back to his left. Vulnerable, sensational object of public attention that he was it all seemed
so logical

Description
An account of the resource
This note from LeRoy Neiman provides an anecdotal account of the artist's reference to Pope John Paul II. Neiman spotted the Pope after returning to New York from a film shoot in the Riviera in 1981. Internalizing this encounter, the artist included the figure in a urban panorama, flying between the spires of Saint Patrick's Cathedral in Midtown. Years later, Neiman removed the Pope from the work, painting him out. The note was most likely made in preparation for the artist's memoir, All Told.

Note on Art
Subject
The topic of the resource
A personal note from LeRoy Neiman on artistic reference, specifically Thomas Rowlandson's A Gaming Table at Devonshire House (1971).
Description
An account of the resource

This note from LeRoy Neiman concerns Thomas Rowlandson's A Gaming Table at Devonshire House. The pen and ink drawing with watercolor features a selection of British aristocrats gathered around a gambling table. (Working and living on the Upper West side, Neiman first saw this piece at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where the work is accessioned.)

Neiman had a longstanding fascination with gambling, rendering many works engaging the subject—e.g. Chemin de Fer (1966), two related pieces entitled Working Girl at Caesars Palace (1980), Casino du Monte Carlo (1981), Baden-Baden (1987), and Desert Inn Baccarat (1997)—as well as partnering with former CEO of Caesers Palace, Cliff Perlman, on a number of occassions. The majority of these pieces were either completed onsite or made from sketches done onsite, professing to the artist’s not only interest but participation in leisure culture.

The note then confirms this interest. Rolandson’s drawing is somewhat of a critique of British aristocratic life. The image, a tableau, zeros in on two members of the Spencer family, sisters Georgiana and Harriet Ponsonby, who hold elusive eye contact. Georgiana was at that point what would be nearly $6 million today in debt. The other figures in the work also seem to have partner off, depicted in contorted asides laced with dubious smirks. Although Rolandson gives no indication on what exactly is going on, it’s clearly not the most flattering portrait. (Neiman himself describes the work as disclosing the “greed of gambling females and the brutish attention of men [in British high society].”)
