Lydia Hoelscher, Correspondence

The topic of the resource
This collection features correspondence between artist LeRoy Neiman and his mother, Lydia Hoelscher, from the artist's early adulthood to Hoelscher's passing in 1985.
Description
An account of the resource
Lydia Hoelscher was an integral figure in LeRoy Neiman's early life, being the near sole consistent presence. Hoelscher, née Serline, married Neiman’s father Charles Runquist in 1918, with the couple and their two sons LeRoy (b. 1921) and Earl (b. 1920) residing in Duluth. When Runquist absconded the family in 1926, the mother moved to Saint Paul, wedding a leather factory foreman of Polish-German descent, "Jack L. Neiman" (John L. Niman). Avoiding what the artist describes in his memoir All Told as, “bothersome adoption legalities,” the children assumed their stepfather’s surname. The elder Neiman's alcoholic tendencies and Depression Era unemployment however led to early divorce. Lydia married Ernst G. Hoelscher roughly five years later, in 1940.

Neiman maintained minimal correspondence with these male figures, including Earl, who had expatriated to Italy. These letters then provide a unique window into the artist’s family life, with the bulk written from Hoelscher to Neiman in the years leading up to her passing.

Dear Mother – We are leaving Stockholm this A.M. for Finland. We had a very fine show here and a lot of fun. I am glad we decided to come because now I have a better idea of what the Swedes are like – I like them.

Dear Folks,
Well we are here and it’s great. We have a corner, outside, rooms on the 17th floor of the Y.M.C.A. Hotel so we can see out for many miles in two directions (one over the lake)
We stayed in Rockford Wednesday nite, and got in here at 8:30 on Thursday morning. The trip went fine except I backed into a concrete post at Mendota and smashed a rear fender and taillight all to hell.
Outlined on photo is the Chicago Art Institute where I’m going to school.
Love LeRoy

An account of the resource
LeRoy Neiman’s notes on art encompasses the artist’s comments on art generally as well as his personal process, career and critical reception, style, and artistic reference. Although this collection provides insights into Neiman’s perception of art’s role in life and work, its extent is not final. The artist’s musings on the subject spill over to other records, such as his thoughts on childhood, travel, sports, food culture, and class politics.

The majority of these documents were made in preparation for the artist’s memoir, All Told.

LAUTREC
In 1949 Carl O. [?] wrote a (about 30 page) piece about Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec in [a] Chicago Art Institute publication of about 30 pages devoted to the Art Institute’s collection of theatric prints
Born 1864 Laurtrecs litho in 1893 in pure art Nouveau Influenced Young Picasso
[?] assistant Hugh Edwards would bring out box after box of Lautrec lithos for me to hold into white glove hands to study. His line, tonality, etc. The drawing. A half-century had passed since he passed away and me equal to update his—
I had discovered Lautrec, he knocked me for a loop. To hid in the book dept of the Golden Rule [department?] store in downtown St. Paul. Paging through the book (title) my mother at my side responded to my excitement and bout the book for me (cost.) publish in 19
(Over)
So I started taking evening (drawing) classes liked it so much I insisted on adding to my classes—the next semester.
The school concealed I was so adamant—on an on. /
It is a treasure[,] and she too paged through the book back home. I was enraptured. I sketched a lot in the army not knowing why. Anything, my buddies, officers, the gun sites. Here was Lautrec concentrating on a style of life of the sort of place I voluntarily sought out. It was like he owned it, invented it. He sure did invent the way he saw and drew it—etc.
[?] dismissed my interest[,] showing no interest in my discovery. Lautrec was not like anyone or thing I’d ever experienced.
I worked hard in class. Taking a crack at everything that presented itself. The [discipline?], the materials[,] tuned in on the instructors. Everyday was discovery day[.]
I was sampling, discarding, learning, my confidence in how my work measured up and grew, but there was something lacking. Something (else) I needed. It was to draw freely, subject of my own selection. I wanted to sketch. Investigate possibilities that would turn me loose, to discover for myself. To be like Lautrec
Then I kept leaning into the fashion illustration class door. They were drawing [?][,] reemphasizing different aspects of the figure[,] sort of like Lautrec. I was told at the office I could not register for F1 as a painting major.

A note from LeRoy Neiman on his relationship with Henri Toulouse-Lautrec.
Description
An account of the resource
This note from LeRoy Neiman is one of many touching on Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Neiman opens the writing with a remark repeated elsewhere in the collection, concerning his discovery of the artist—that is, meandering through the book department of the Golden Rule Department Store in St. Paul, with his mother; he had returned shortly from the war. But, the note should be understood as part encyclopedia, part anecdote. Neiman weaves through facts about Lautrec and associated publications alongside how the figure served as inspirational for Neiman, furthering his interests in illustration and catalyzing an his enrollment in things including but not limited to night drawing courses.

Description
An account of the resource
This note from LeRoy Neiman provides a brief history of the artist’s final portrait of his mother, Lydia Hoelscher. The work was a sketch, dated 1980. Although the record is a singular account, it exhibits rhetorical overlap with other notes the artist made about rendering his mother. These overlaps include references to painters, Bellows, Rembrandt, and Freud, as well as quoted quips from Hoelscher.

Dearest LeRoy + Janet:
Well I think its time for some one to [?] down and write, so here goes, Easter was here and gone so it’s a long time not to hear from you, and Janet did you get your Birthday gift?, I waited over two weeks ago, so if you didn’t get it let me know, altho[ugh] I guess there isn’t much I can do about it, as for once I didn’t insure it, any way I hope it got there and you can use it, even the basketball player to stand around and catch dust.
I have been so busy its not funny, to-day I just finished cleaning the front porch, so there is no more winter dust out there. I also washed 24 windows on both sides, so that’s it for the week, Friday and Sat. I go over to church to work, the [?] is having a rummage sale Sat, to try to raise some money, we are almost broke, I mean the [?].
I looked in the May Playboy for your work, but there wasn’t any so I didn’t get I, let me know when you have some thing in, I looked at Playboy after dark on T.V last week, but didn’t care much for Hefner’s program that night, he himself looks good, I like his longer hair. /
so we’ll see what he has on tomorrow night thats Thursday.
And our twins won to-day a tuff game 7 to 6 for the twins, so far so good for them, hope they keep it up.
Want to write Earl yet, no guess I’ll run along on this one, Earl called me Easter morning and I didn’t hear from him since but I guess its my turn to write him then, don’t you think?
We are all so busy in our own way, and time goes by so fast, maybe thats [an] excuse when we don’t write, but I think and pray for you every day.
God bless and guide you in all your doings.
Love to both of you,
Mother.
We learn [too] late how small we are how little we know.

Dearest LeRoy + Janet; -- Thanks for the phone call this morning, sure was nice to hear your voice, sure feel bad I can’t make it to N.Y. now, hope I can some day, I miss you very much, just sending a clipping out of the paper about your old pal, thought you would like to see it, the old boy is doing pretty good and even looks good.
It’s really chilly outside to-day it makes the house so damp I think I’ll turn the heat up to dry it out my old arthritis will feel better [too].
sure wish I would be going to N.Y. to-morrow as planned, but hope the good Lord will show me a way soon, I really want to see you so bad it hurts, and see your work. etc, I love the old studio.
I am going into tears here right now so I’ll cut it short just wanted to send the clipping.
Take care of yourself, hope I can see those tickets before to [too] long.
God bless and guide you well

Dearest LeRoy + Janet; --
Well its all over, not only Christmas, but old Truman is also done, that all you hear on the radio, not that I am not sorry but its better for him. I was thinking of you all day yesterday, picturing you at Great Gorge, that lovely place. but I had a pretty good day, all in all, of course I went to mass, then the young couple next door ask[ed] me over, you know their little girl Jeni is very close to me, of course she is growing up is 11 years old now, so we had a turkey dinner and different kind of drinks, which I didn’t drink to [too] much of as it seems now days they don’t (like) me, my stomach don’t feel good the day after, they have a tree and everything that goes with Christmas and chicken, so was not alone after all, I guess they kind of feel sorry for me, and we talked about you of course, and your work, they hope to see you someday. I am writing this letter on the stationary I got from Marlys at least she took care of it, and I don’t know why she sent me two boxes, and that was all, but I know how it was for her and all excited about going to be with Earl, I hope they had a (good) Christmas, being to-gether meant a great deal to him, the last letter I had from Earl he didn’t really know what they were going to do, he hoped to be by themselves didn’t want to go to their friends house, with kids and all, when I talked to you on the phone, I forgot to thank you for the check, it was wonderful. /
and the home made card that you [and] Janet made, thank you from my heart you are so good and kind to me, I don’t know yet how I’ll spend it. I get so excited when you call I always forget what to say, its so wonderful to hear you[r] voice, how we have New Years coming up and I am sure I will not take part of the wild life, I’ll go to mass maybe stay up long enough to hear the bells, but when a person is all alone its hard to stay up that long. and the real meaning of it, is not the choice that half drunk people make, so I’ll start the New Year the [quiet] way.
But yesterday I kept thinking of you, and all the other Christmas in the past, there has been some happy ones. I hope the toaster will be of some use one place or the other, I keep thinking of your house at Great Gorge what a place to have a family Christmas in, some day you will have it. I hope, everything is there to work with. I am day dreaming for you.
so now I’ll wait to hear from you from Chicago and I wish you luck and Happiness for the New Year this should get to you buy Sat. and you will be back in N.Y. will be thinking of and praying for you as always.
God bless and guide you in all your doings:
all my love to both of you.
