The topic of the resource
A personal note from LeRoy Neiman detailing plates for his memoir, All Told.
Description
An account of the resource
This note from LeRoy Neiman was made in preparation for his memoir, All Told. Although the document's content ranges from Playboy magazine to Dizzy Gillespie and US presidents, the bullet points are most likely suggestions of book plates for chapters on his early adulthood in Chicago. The lines stricken through are then most likely photographs found. At the bottom of the page is an obscure comment: “Janet says LeRoy talking head too much[,] like some voice over images. I don’t feel so. Well talk.” The implication of “talking head” is unclear. The phrase “lik[ing] voice over images” is also unclear. And, the identity of “we” is ambiguous. LeRoy also seems to refer to himself in the third person in this passage. Given the context, the comment was most likely related to the book's editing process, but the confusions of subject, dialogue, and direct objects complicate the reading.
On this document’s reverse is an illustration Neiman made of former president Richard Nixon blowing hot air. The drawing feels somewhat out of place, anachronistic, given the fact that Neiman was in Chicago in the 1950s and the note itself was written between 1990-2011. The president’s term lasted from 1969 to 1974.

A note from LeRoy Neiman on critical reception as well as his interest in jazz musicians Bessie Smith and Louis Armstrong.
Description
An account of the resource
The note from LeRoy Neiman contains multiple commentaries, including one on his critical reception and another on Louis Armstrong. The former is one of many illustrating Neiman’s indignation over his exclusion from the “art world". The latter provides a general look at Armstrong, his celebrity, and pop culture anecdotes. Webbing these distinct sections, are some general comments about criticism and popularity detached from explicit subject or person. The proximity of these three accounts invites conflation. But, it is a probably more reasonable to assume Neiman is thinking about artistic merit and celebrity culture more generally, abstractly weaving disparate experiences.

A note from LeRoy Neiman on making art in his cultural moment.
Description
An account of the resource
This note from LeRoy Neiman provides a self-conscious, retrospective reflection on artistic influence. Within the writing, the artist characterizes his influences as “contemporary” and “how things look today”. As abstract as this description might seem, this interest in now-ness, and recording the present moment from the inside, was very much a theme in the artist’s work. On a more granular level, the note references how more modern, electronic arts (e.g. TV, film, and advertising) proved vital to Neiman’s practice and conceptualization of the location of visual arts in culture, more generally. This self-positioning of his work vis-a-vis these low brow cultural forms then speaks to the high-art, low-art division that was of interest in the mid-20th century and a personal preoccupation for the artist. That said, it should be noted that this collapsing of stereotypically high and low forms was not an agenda of sorts but instead simply a side-effect of Neiman’s cultural enmeshment.

A note from LeRoy Neiman on his artistic overlap with jazz.
Description
An account of the resource
This abbreviated note from LeRoy Neiman looks at the overlap between jazz and the artist’s style and process. Neiman, throughout the short note, repeatedly draws a parallel between this genre’s “polyrhythmic”-ism and his work. Furthermore, he underlines a kind of sense of danger or risk in working in this dynamic. Neiman writes, “When I work its like painting with no S N. / works with no safety net.” That said, the convergences between musical and artistic style, excitement and hazard embedded in the discussion occur on the plane of subtext, not overt declaration. Neiman starting in his early days as a Chicagoan felt a connection to jazz, as evinced by his vast collection of work addressing this textured musical genre and culture.

An account of the resource
LeRoy Neiman’s notes on art encompasses the artist’s comments on art generally as well as his personal process, career and critical reception, style, and artistic reference. Although this collection provides insights into Neiman’s perception of art’s role in life and work, its extent is not final. The artist’s musings on the subject spill over to other records, such as his thoughts on childhood, travel, sports, food culture, and class politics.

The majority of these documents were made in preparation for the artist’s memoir, All Told.

I held an excessive regard for public taste, which brought about a flagging interest in what was stressed in the art officialdom, resulting in my being the recipient of adverse criticism or total disregard. My popularity with the public didn’t help with these taste makers?

Description
An account of the resource

This note from LeRoy Neiman addresses the tension between his public and critical reception. The writing opens with a statement of confusion (i.e. “My popularity with the public didn’t help these taste makers?), followed by a nod to his widening of response with travel abroad. In incompatibility, the document finishes with a punchy, jazz-inspired image. One of many notes touching on the artist’s relationship with the art establishment, the document was mostly likely made in preparation for the Neiman's memoir, All Told.

Description
An account of the resource
This note from LeRoy Neiman provides a duplicate response. The writing traffics through a range of subjects, such as racial injustice, Neiman’s relationship with his brother Earl, and work with Playboy magazine. Little of the remark proves either conclusive or comprehensive. However, Neiman does elaborate more on the impulses and relationships that fueled his success; this discussion exists largely on a plane of generality and abstraction. The reason behind duplication proves unclear.
