Claude Monet
Along about 1960 diving in Paris I clipped photo and of a magazine probably only “Match” of a white bearded ([?]) Monetish a gent attired in black promenading with a walking stick.
Deciding it appropriate to fit a old man into a street scene I was doing at the time.
Every few years I inserted the (same) character into some painted (or other like) along the piers of Monte Carlo, (along) the beach at Cannes, up the Camps Elysee , Blv. St Germain and eve the sands of Wakikki Beach
To sneak a senior citizen like that occasionally into a composition amused me (privately) and buyers would sometimes sight him in purchasing a print my characters, [?] Claude Monet (with his white beard) painted in chivalry WITH FAILING EYESIGHT right up to her death in 1925 at age 86
which alerted the SO THAT
on my 84th Birthday in 2005 it suddenly dawned on me that in one [?] or another this OLD FART in my painting had ways subjectively been for me

The topic of the resource
A personal note from LeRoy Neiman on his relationship with painter Claude Monet.
Description
An account of the resource
This note from LeRoy Neiman relays a personal fantasy the artist entertained about French impressionist Claude Monet. Within the document, Neiman details finding a Monet-esque figure in Paris, incorporating this character into his work. The representation transitions from likeness to caricature, to motif, eventually resulting in an epiphany of self-depiction. Neiman's intention behind this note - whether the anecdote is supposed to forge a kinship between Monet and himself, and by extension their respective work, or if the story is just simply a humorous account - is unknown.

Description
An account of the resource
This note from LeRoy Neiman details his personal relationship with the Metropolitan (Met) Opera House at Lincoln Center. The artist moved to New York, specifically to the Upper West Side, in the 1963, three years before Wallace Harrison's design was complete. Neiman was interested in the site not only for its architectural grace but also the establishment's glamorous crowds and connection to leisure culture. The note was most likely made in preparation for the artist's memoir, All Told.

LINCOLN
[…]
When I was 1- years old only 65 years after Lincoln’s assassination people still lived who had seen him live, even talked to him.
He was still real. (There was a salty old school Janitor in our neighborhood who claimed he conversed with Abe at Gettysburg. Certainly a bullshitter it was possible and believable)
Lincoln born 1809 when Lincoln was 12 Napoleon died in 1821
Around 8 or 9 I did a daily comic strip. I called “Honest Abe” My abe was inspired by a Mathew Brady photo of Lincoln tall and posing (IN A BLACK SILK STOVE PIPE HAT) General Mc Clenans field ten Headquarters during the Civil War. An erect all black stick figure. elongated. I always depicted him towering over whoever was in the photo. I colored my strip on Sundays

Lincoln was a very real compelling figure to me rising from on impoverished, uneducated background in rural Kentucky to the Presidency
I put up balloons in the frames with sayings but no story line.
I livened the strip up with cameos by Joe Palooka, Moon Mullins, Jiggs and Tillie the Toiler – (Anne Strip) – favorite of mine
INSERT
Lincoln did no grow his beard until 5 years before his death
First bearded president – started bear after he was elected
was photographed hundreds of times in studio photos His photos sold for 1 dollar
stood 6’ x 4 “ 180 lbs
Lincoln exploited the photos as Napoleon did the artist. Napoleons every battle ceremony, mood was lionized by the painter Raffet the most favored among dozens
Just as Pope Paul II was the first media pope
all presidents no facial hair until Lincoln
all presidents had facial hair until Wilson
all presidents are clean shaven
As a result of one of my mothers spring cleaning rampages the strip along with other works were unintentionally destroyed

[In] 1979 After a relaxed lunch at 21 film maker Ken Zaren and I were short cutting across central park on foot headed for The West Side [///]
We (having) recently returned from a shoot on the Riviera
were not on the lookout for anything special let along something that would provide inspiration. But there is no assurance in New York that something unexpected will not turn up.
It was a balmy day as we strode.
(along a path running from one of the curving streets that snake through the park) Pausing for a light around a bend came
2 Bike cops followed by an open [convertible] then a sedan. The short convoy glided to a halt at the same traffic signal. There seated in the first car in all white creating almost radiating light – Pope Paul II looking straight at us. Frozen in our tracks I swear that as the light turned green and they purred away the Pope actually looked back over his shoulders.
Ken a devout Catholic was enthralled as was I. We had just communicated at close range what amounted to what was like a private audience with Pope Paul III.
Along back in my studio the surprise encounter struck. I could not shake the brief memory NOR DID I TRY. I was in the process of painting a panoramic view of Manhattan result of sketches made from the 86th floor of the Empire State Building, a horizontal composition starting at 42nd ST at the lower and from the Library and Bryant Park up 5th Ave beyond Central Park to Harlem,
Flanked by the rivers on either side of the island. /
Since the Pope had flown from Rome to Kenney on a TWA commercial flight (A FIRST) that brought about a travel with THE Angles promotion he belongs
IN THE PICTURE HIS ITINERARY STARTED WITH A sensational New York visit
So I decided I’d put him in the painting.
He’d be flying over midtown Manhattan
So I had him floating in the air above the skyscrapers like a Thanksgiving day parade float. It worked.
THE POPE AS A FLOTE [sic]. I placed him airborn [sic] buoyantly SUSPENDED OVER Midtown the spires of St Patricks back to his left. Vulnerable, sensational object of public attention that he was it all seemed
so logical

A personal note from LeRoy Neiman on art.
Description
An account of the resource
This note from LeRoy Neiman provides an anecdotal account of the artist's reference to Pope John Paul II. Neiman spotted the Pope after returning to New York from a film shoot in the Riviera in 1981. Internalizing this encounter, the artist included the figure in a urban panorama, flying between the spires of Saint Patrick's Cathedral in Midtown. Years later, Neiman removed the Pope from the work, painting him out. The note was most likely made in preparation for the artist's memoir, All Told.

Ricardo’s Bar, originally on exhibition at the Wrigley building, was purchased by Mogen David Wine, a New York state based winemaker and distributor originally founded in Chicago, under the precondition Neiman painted one of the company's bottles into the bar. Approximately five years later, a buyer of unknown designation desired to purchase the from Mogan David, with this sale predicated on the removal the wine company’s bottle. Neiman complied. It is unclear where the piece was located during the wine company’s ownership.

Subject
The topic of the resource
A personal note from LeRoy Neiman on artistic reference, specifically Spanish Romanticist Francisco Goya and bullfighting.
Description
An account of the resource
This note from LeRoy Neiman provides a list of artistic references, particularly work from artist Francisco Goya; a preponderance of the pieces cited depict bullfighting.

Neiman made a collection of works engaging bullfighting and bull dodging including, Adriano, World Champion Bull Rider On Little Yellow Jacket, which was widly distributed through Knoedler Publishing as posters and prints. That said, the majority of Neiman's works were rendered on site, with the artist both sketching and painting contests in the flesh as well as using these live materials for studio-based paintings. (Neiman attended many bull events accross the US as well as in Spain and Mexico.) This note then provides insight into the artist's more art historical interest in the animal and the sport, but should not be seen as total.

Description
An account of the resource
LeRoy Neiman’s notes on art encompasses the artist’s comments on art generally as well as his personal process, career and critical reception, style, and artistic reference. Although this collection provides insights into Neiman’s perception of art’s role in life and work, its extent is not final. The artist’s musings on the subject spill over to other records, such as his thoughts on childhood, travel, sports, food culture, and class politics.

The majority of these documents were made in preparation for the artist’s memoir, All Told.

The topic of the resource
A personal note from LeRoy Neiman on artistic reference, specifically Thomas Rowlandson's A Gaming Table at Devonshire House (1971).
Description
An account of the resource

This note from LeRoy Neiman concerns Thomas Rowlandson's A Gaming Table at Devonshire House. The pen and ink drawing with watercolor features a selection of British aristocrats gathered around a gambling table. (Working and living on the Upper West side, Neiman first saw this piece at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where the work is accessioned.)

Neiman had a longstanding fascination with gambling, rendering many works engaging the subject—e.g. Chemin de Fer (1966), two related pieces entitled Working Girl at Caesars Palace (1980), Casino du Monte Carlo (1981), Baden-Baden (1987), and Desert Inn Baccarat (1997)—as well as partnering with former CEO of Caesers Palace, Cliff Perlman, on a number of occassions. The majority of these pieces were either completed onsite or made from sketches done onsite, professing to the artist’s not only interest but participation in leisure culture.

The note then confirms this interest. Rolandson’s drawing is somewhat of a critique of British aristocratic life. The image, a tableau, zeros in on two members of the Spencer family, sisters Georgiana and Harriet Ponsonby, who hold elusive eye contact. Georgiana was at that point what would be nearly $6 million today in debt. The other figures in the work also seem to have partner off, depicted in contorted asides laced with dubious smirks. Although Rolandson gives no indication on what exactly is going on, it’s clearly not the most flattering portrait. (Neiman himself describes the work as disclosing the “greed of gambling females and the brutish attention of men [in British high society].”)

Description
An account of the resource
This note from LeRoy Neiman provides a comment on artists Thomas Rowlandson and Willam Hogarth. Despite the brevity of the statement, Neiman seem to be drawing comparison between the two artists, hitting on a kinship in aesthetic and tone. At the bottom of the page is list of other 18th and 19th century illustrators engaging Humanism and satire. The record was most likely personal in nature.
