Description
An account of the resource
LeRoy Neiman’s notes on art encompasses the artist’s comments on art generally as well as his personal process, career and critical reception, style, and artistic reference. Although this collection provides insights into Neiman’s perception of art’s role in life and work, its extent is not final. The artist’s musings on the subject spill over to other records, such as his thoughts on childhood, travel, sports, food culture, and class politics. <br /><br />The majority of these documents were made in preparation for the artist’s memoir, <em>All Told</em>.

Subject
The topic of the resource
A note providing a loose biography from LeRoy Neiman, from his childhood to service in WWII.
Description
An account of the resource
This note from LeRoy Neiman provides a loose biography for the artist, early life through early adulthood. Moreoever, the document—written in preparation for the artist’s memoir, <em>All Told</em>—foreshadows the emphasis’ of chapters on these subjects (i.e. his broken home, the Depression, academic underachievement, and dereliction in WWII). Below this list is a further commentary to his military service and training. Neiman, with the record, seems to make a connection between these personal “failures” and his artistic career, with these founderings as presupposing his achievements in the arts. These failures should then not be seen as expression of deficiency in character but a personal assertion of a kind of externality from bourgeois life. Neiman frames himself as a naturally born and socially conditioned risk taker, not entrepreneur.

A note from LeRoy Neiman linking Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo's <em>Punchinellos Outside a Circus</em> (c. late 18th to early 19th century) with childhood memory.
Description
An account of the resource
This note from LeRoy Neiman links a drawing of Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo (not to be confused with Domenico Tiepolo, Giovanni’s father) and Neiman’s childhood. The drawing, <em>Punchinellos Outside a Circus</em>, depicts a cluster of bowed punchinellos outside a slatted building, backs to the viewer. In the background, outside the structure, a larger standing mob is attempting to peak through the panels. Neiman compares this scene to watching the Saint Paul Saints play for free through knotholes in through the bleachers as a kid. As anachronistic as this comparison might seem, it discloses the artist’s interests longstanding interest in sports, art, theatrics, and spectatorship. At the bottom of the note he as provided a more extended commentary on the notion of spectator. In addition, Neiman most likley saw Tiepolo's drawing at the Metropolitian Museum of Art, where the piece is collected, given the museum's proximity to his home.

A note from LeRoy Neiman comparing a print by Cornelius Bloemaert and the artist's personal experience during the Great Depression.
Description
An account of the resource
This note from LeRoy Neiman, once again, draws a comparison between the narrative content of an older artwork and the artist’s child. This particular record juxtaposes a print by Cornelius Bloemaert (c. late 17th century) acquisitoned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art— just across the park form Neiman’s in-home studio at Hotel des Artistes on the Upper West Side—and his experience in Saint Paul, Minnesota during the Great Depression.

Kid in St. Paul – no heroes – no advisors on your own – Depend on own judgement.
I was no athelete to speak of – did wrestle on the Washington High School team with Tully Hickman (from Rondo St.) a black body builder used to take me on. 145 lbs. He was always working out and too sweaty and slippery to get a grip on.
Embarrassed to do Football posters (student dance posters too) because it was not prestigious. The attitude was to be a member of team was more significant
It was not worth the effort – teamwork and plays were not for me.

I wrote some poems while an art student (prose-poems) in which I referred to a bloody sun at noon. A red sun. 45 years later reading the Rise of the Ancient Mariner I realized I had recalled at that time 1949 the high school reading in 1937
