This collection features LeRoy Neiman’s notes on food.
Description
An account of the resource
This series of notes from LeRoy Neiman provides insight into the artist’s interest in food and haute cuisine. Although Neiman is largely known for his works depicting sports events and celebrities, the artist had a more general interest in leisure culture. This interest, although apparent in a range of Neiman's artworks and writing, proves somewhat elevated in this collection, in addition to the relevant artworks. That said, this collection of notes on food were not produced in conjunction with Neiman's artworks on the same subject. Instead, these documents were made in preparation for the artist’s memoir, All Told (like the majority of the artist’s writings held in posterity). Thus, the notes should be read more as an exercise in refining an outlook in retrospect than part of an artistic process.

Description
An account of the resource
This note from LeRoy Neiman provides a set of images, thinking about food and food culture. Although the writing appears to be composed of almost purely fragmentary statements, such as “gulp and gorge”, it proves part of a larger project of crafting a language around both leisure and food. (Many of these phrases appear recycled throughout Neiman’s notes, as well as sometimes making appearances in artworks.) The document then speaks to both the artist's aesthetic as well as more sociological interests.

A note on haute cuisine as art
Description
An account of the resource
This not from LeRoy Neiman theorizes the connection between so-called art and “food as an art form”. The winding writing then proceeds to compare cooking and (largely fine) dining to at set of what might be thought of more conventionally as cultural creations; i.e. a “3 act play”, an opera, and the Mona Lisa. The artist closes the document with a nod to leisure culture (i.e. “You don’t have to be hungry to eat truffles / caviar, or thirsty to drink champagne) and a joke about Count Dracula being a sommelier. Overall, the note then touches on not only the artist’s interest in haute cuisine and “high art” (theorizing the former as the latter) but also the sense of play with which he approaches subject matter.

Description
An account of the resource
This note from LeRoy Neiman provides an a pictorial description of a fragmented set of images from haute cuisine. Despite this fragmentation, the note proves divided in three more general sections: food, “High Tea”, and wine. Neiman then describes images connected to these subjects, such as the starched white chef’s hat, a shined teapot, and the “blood of grapes”.

Description
An account of the resource
This note from LeRoy Neiman provides an fragmentary, aesthetic portrait of french haute cuisine. The writing begins with a comment on black truffles, followed by brief biography of Jean Banchet. The artist’s then closes the document with a nod to the Michelin-starred chef, Paul Bocuse. Although there are no direct links between this document and any one particular work, the note speaks his interest in both the aesthetic as well as sociological aspects of fine dining.

A note on food and leisure culture.
Description
An account of the resource
This note from LeRoy Neiman looks at the position of food in leisure culture. The document itself is comprised of a variety of fragmented images from elite settings (e.g. “your food is being plated as hurried to the table”, “Well healed older men of financial position”, “cosmopolitan opulence”, and “velvet rope”), which tacitly point to both the artist’s process of seeing as well as acknowledgement of said images in a larger social frame. Overall, the document is then testament not only to Neiman’s method but also his persistent sociological interests.

This note from LeRoy Neiman looks at staff in the restaurant industry. The tacit list is peppered with a variety of aesthetic comments (e.g. hand sewn buttons - Check trousers - kerchief / Toque name on jacket) and poetic turns of phrase (i.e. “You can judge a restaurant by its waiter / Not created in high culture / on their feet until their legs give out) that point to the artist’s artistic investment in these subjects. Although not made in preparation for any one artwork, the note can be seen as both preparatory and reflective on his food related pieces.

Description
An account of the resource
This note (written on top the title page of Cam Sigler’s Guide to Fly Fishing, from 1997) provides a playful musing on fish, and more specifically fly fishing. The document is chock-full of pseudo-cerebral sayings such as, “kiss a fish”, “think like a fish”, “the art of wooing a fish”, and “what the fish said”. Parallel to these phrases, Neiman has listed as set of actions related to fishing (e.g. “strike / fish bites”, “net the fish”, “it takes more skill to return a fish safely (undamaged)”). The artist was self-professedly poor at fly fishing.

Description
An account of the resource
This note on food from LeRoy Neiman explores the performative nature of fine dining. Furthermore, the through line of this poetic, fragmented writing seems to be the haute cuisine’s focus on timing. Neiman has ornamented the document with an illustration of a gravestone (1921-20); the artist was born in 1921.

A note on the dress of chefs.
Description
An account of the resource
This note from LeRoy Neiman (scrawled on the back of a notice for the elections of the Friar Club’s Board of Governors) gives a rundown of chefs' normative dress, in the form of a kind of quasi-checklist. This garb list includes, but is not limited to: a chef toque, clogs, checkered trousers, kerchief, and apron. The note closes with, “With this (chef) man, so attired, enters dining room of a great restaurant it is an event for the diners.” Overall, the note then seems to be hitting on the performative agency of this occupational wear—or costuming.
