Title
Note on Art
Subject
A note from LeRoy Neiman on being "a painter".
Description
This note from LeRoy Neiman looks at the artist’s relationship with characterizing himself as “a painter”. Focusing largely on his time in Saint Paul, Minnesota, Neiman looks at experiences across childhood to young adulthood--touching on his work with painting instructor Clement Haupers at the St. Paul School of Fine Arts as well as drawing as a child--informs this identity. There is a sense of inevitability, or predetermination that pervades then note. However, a tension over designation of a “real painter” on the part of Neiman complicates this straightforward narrative.

At the ready
I had expected to spend my life as an artist painting like Haupers a real painter. (With all the trimmings) the mantle of a successful (POPULAR) successful artist as compared to the simple life of painting was never entered my mind, or the canonized you know personally
There was no (no preparations for success) pressure in my childhood to achieve [.] It was just natural I believe in myself. I felt my talent I could pull off in drawing many of the things I intended. I expected as much (of myself)
Things I couldn’t do I could draw things which required courage, endurance, strength, speed,
Painting—nurturing, nourishing, building up—deleting—destroying, replenishing, harvesting, eviscerating
