Title

Note on Art

Subject

A note providing a loose biography from LeRoy Neiman, from his childhood to service in WWII.

Description

This note from LeRoy Neiman provides a loose biography for the artist, early life through early adulthood. Moreoever, the document—written in preparation for the artist’s memoir, All Told—foreshadows the emphasis’ of chapters on these subjects (i.e. his broken home, the Depression, academic underachievement, and dereliction in WWII). Below this list is a further commentary to his military service and training. Neiman, with the record, seems to make a connection between these personal “failures” and his artistic career, with these founderings as presupposing his achievements in the arts. These failures should then not be seen as expression of deficiency in character but a personal assertion of a kind of externality from bourgeois life. Neiman frames himself as a naturally born and socially conditioned risk taker, not entrepreneur.
