Title

Note on Art

Subject

A note from LeRoy Neiman, listing a variety of casino-based artworks; the list is written over an old birthday card.

Description

This note from LeRoy Neiman provides a list of entertainer portraits the artist made, featuring the likes of Mae West (“Diamond Lil”), Marlene Dietrich (whom Neiman met while stationed in Aachen, Germany), mother Judy Garland and daughter Liza Minnelli (together), and those featured in Steve Wynn’s various Las Vegas casino productions. Although the list eschews explanation via Neiman’s biography, and the entertainers themselves have little in common, the record does shed light both on the artist’s breadth of interest concerning popular culture as well as the size and allure of the entertainment industry during that time (the 1950s through 1990s). The note, written on the interior of an expired, bisected birthday card, was most likely made in preparation for the artist’s memoir, All Told.
